As a senior at Medford High School in Medford, WI, Hemer made first team all-state, second team all-state by the Associated Press, first team all-region, all-area, and all-conference, and conference defensive player of the year. He served as his team's captain and posted career totals of 146 tackles, nearly 50 TFLs, and 11 QB sacks. In addition to football, Hemer was a National Honor Society member.
