Craig Smith is a freshman and a Madison native. During high school, he spent three years with the Waterloo Black Hawks USHL team where he played 54 games during his senior year where he posted 28 goals and 76 points with 108 penalty minutes to become second in the league with scoring ranks. In 2008, Smith was one of the six players on the 2008 World Junior A Challenge Tournament All-Star team when he collected three goals and eight points in five games as a team captain, resulting in the gold medal win for his team. In 2007 he skated in the World Junior A Challenge where he posted 13 goals and earned 23 points in 58 games with the Waterloo team as a junior. In his first season with the Waterloo Black Hawks, he took eight goals and brought in 19 points in the 45 games he skated in.
