Before playing for the Badgers, Johnson skated for four years on his high school hockey team in Waupaca, WI. In addition, he skated in the NAHL for 2 years, making it to the NAHL Championship finals. Johnson also won two state tournaments as a member of Team Wisconsin. In addition to hockey, Johnson played high school football and won three conference tournaments.
During his freshman season with the Badgers, Johnson appeared in 17 games. As a sophomore, Johnson played in 23 games, including 20 at the end of the season. He was named the Dr. Joseph Coyne Most Consistent player and voted the team’s Most Improved Player by his fellow players.
