As a high school basketball player in Verona, WI, Valentyn made honorable mention all-state from the Associated Press and helped lead his team to their first appearance at the state tournament. Valentyn was redshirt his freshman season. In the 2007-2008 season, he played in 10 games and made Academic All-Big Ten. During the 2008-2009 season, Valentyn was a redshirt sophomore and played in 8 games. Currently, Valentyn is a red shirt junior in his fourth season as a walk on and has played in five games.
