Nortman earned his first letter in the 2008 season where he played in all 13 games as the starting punter. He made 66 punts for 2761 yards with an average of 41.8 yards, making him sixth in the Big Ten and fifth in the country among freshmen.

Already in the 2009 season Nortman has averaged 45 yards on 2 punts. In the Sept. 12th Fresno State game, Nortman set a season-high of 58 yards.
