Having coached basketball for 26 years, Coach Bo Ryan has a deep-rooted tradition of championship seasons and holding school records. In his 9th year coaching of coaching at UW, Ryan’s 193-73 record ranks 3rd on the Wisconsin all time win list. In addition, under Ryan’s leadership, UW’s basketball team has had the five winningest seasons in Badgers’ history. During the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons, the team posted back-to-back school records in numbers of wins; 30 and 31 respectively.
The Badgers’ success at home under Coach Ryan has made the Kohl Center one of the most difficult arenas to play in around the country. Boasting a 120-10 record at home, the Badgers rank 5th in all time best home records. In addition, between December 7th, 2002 and January 24th, 2005, the Badgers did not lose a single home game, the longest winning streak in the country.
Under Ryan, the Badger’s basketball team has captured five Big Ten titles and made it to the NCAA tournament every year. Ryan has the most Big Ten wins in conference history and the first coach in the conference to have 11 big ten wins in each of his first 4 seasons.
Aside from a winning record, Ryan has earned numerous awards. During the 2006-2007 season, Ryan joined the ranks of the 500-Win club, a club with only 18 Division 1 members. All of the coaches in this club have over 500 career wins and Ryan ranked second in overall wins to North Carolina’s head coach Roy Williams. In 2009, Ryan was named head coach of Team USA at the World University Games. In addition, Ryan has won numerous Coach of the Year awards from various organizations.
Before coaching the Badgers, Ryan previously coached at UW-Platteville and UW- Milwaukee. UW-Platteville has named their field house, “Bo Ryan Court” after their former coach. Ryan has also written four books; three on coaching basketball and one autobiography.
