Before playing for the Badgers, Grotting was the assistant captain of his USHL team, the Lincoln Stars. Grotting also played with the Texas Tornados and helped lead the team to national championship for two years in a row. As a freshman with the Badgers, Grotting scored the first goal of his career against Minnesota Duluth. Later on in the season, he scored the game winning goal in the Badger Hockey Showdown against Providence. As a sophomore, Grotting played most of the season on the third line. During his junior season, Grotting became the only player to have a three game goal scoring streak. In addition, he set a career record of 14 points and scored a career record of 5 goals. Grotting also scored the game winning goal in the first round of the playoffs and is the first Badger from Alabama to earn a letter.
