As a junior and senior at Burke High School in Omaha, NE, Lerner was a top 10 state punter. As a senior, he made first team all-state as a kicker, first team all-metro, first team all-division, and was named first team all-state by Huskerlandpreps.com. Lerner was a two year letterwinner in football and a four year letterwinner in soccer. As a soccer player, Lerner played two years for the Olympic Development Program.
