As a senior at McDowell High School in Erie, PA, Fenton made first team all-state as a linebacker and first team all-conference as a quarterback. He set a school record for yards rushed in a single season (1933) and also holds the school's all-time record of 4267 rushing yards and 55 touchdowns. Fenton was ranked as the number 21 athlete in the country.
